Welcome! Plum Island Animal Disease Center (PIADC) is located on an 840 acre island approximately 1.5 miles from the eastern end of Long Island’s North Fork. PIADC is largely self sufficient. The physical and operational infrastructure is, in many respects, similar to what would be required to support a small town; including, but not limited to, potable water and waste water, steam, back-up power, fire and rescue services, and harbors both at Plum Island and on Long Island. Collectively, about 300 people work at PIADC with approximately 60% of the employees reside in New York and remaining 40% reside in Connecticut. The majority of research conducted at PIADC occurs within the bio-containment facility -- approximately 200,000 square feet and includes Bio-Level 3, Bio-Level 3 Ag, and equipment and machinery spaces. A 55,000 square foot administrative building, which is connected to the bio-containment facility, provides office space, meeting rooms, and auditorium, ~3000 square feet of BSL-2 laboratory space, and a cafeteria. The introduction of high consequence animal diseases into the US would have a devastating effect on our economy and way of life. PIADC’s mission is directly related to protecting the country from this risk. Specifically, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) conducts basic research to better understand these diseases and, based on that research, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is developing vaccines. The USDA also maintains and continues to develop foreign animal disease diagnostic and forensics capabilities and trains US and international veterinarians to better diagnose diseases in the field.
